Shiva and Shivam

Happy Maha Shivaratri. Sharing my thoughts about Lord Shiva from different perspectives(Religion, spirituality and reality)

From religious perspective Lord Shiva is a Hindu deity whose primary function is destruction.

From spiritual perspective shivam is pure love and shivam is a spiritual condition. After prolonged practice a spiritual aspirant can witness Shiva in meditation, dreams or even vision during waking time. No one can validate another person’s experience, only ones own heart and intuition can guide. Such things may seem exciting initially but still there is a long way to go.

From reality perspective, what really matters is the way we live every moment. Our thoughts, words and actions and the directions we take during every moment of choice. Even if we are fortunate enough to be blessed with great spiritual conditions by great gurus, spiritual conditions evaporate unless we live by that consciousness every moment.

Shivam is pure love. So to remain in the condition/consciousness of love what are we supposed to do? How can we move towards shivam the pure love? What exists within us originally is love we are supposed to remove all the qualities which obstruct it. Only self introspection and listening to the inner voice can reveal us our qualities - thoughts, words and actions which are against love has to be monitored and corrected. All these barriers to love has to be destroyed. Wonder if that is why the deity Shiva is called the destroyer - The destroyer of all man made barriers to true love and take us to the state of pure love (Shivam).

May all our evil qualities and thoughts be destroyed and we move towards purity and love.
